"You aren't little," Lily insisted teasingly. "You're just slender! It's better than being morbidly obese!"
Albus threw his head back with laughter. His little sister did have a point, he supposed. Though most days he would prefer to be tall and brawny like his brother, he knew he couldn't always complain about his petite build; it could be way worse. Of course, in any physical, non-magical fight, he was at a bit of a loss, and he definitely wasn't any sort of professional in arm wrestling or weight-lifting, but he didn't really have much of a choice. Besides, as much as people taunted him for it, Al owned it all up to his dad, who we was very proud to look like. (Though that tended to get a bit annoying sometimes too!)
He grinned when Lily explained that she would choose him over James. Al honestly couldn't help it. He and James were very competitive brothers. "Course I'm nicer than James," he replied, his green eyes brightening. "Even if I am a snake, and I tease you from time-to-time." Winking at his sister, Al sighed and let his mind drift into the past. "At least our arguments aren't as stupid as they used to be. Remember when I hexed Mr. Snuggles?" He shuddered at the memory of Lily's most prized teddy bear. "I was only six. I really had no idea what I had done, but I felt so bad when I realised how upset you were." Albus shook his head and chuckled slightly, remembering how he, himself, burst into tears—scared that he had done something he never meant to do.
Lily went on to insist that she wouldn't be fighting for him—she'd just be helping. Albus rolled his eyes. "Yes, you would make things worse," he agreed, letting some laughter pass through his lips. "The attention isn't so bad at times. Y'know… I love mum and dad and all… and I love what they did… but sometimes, it's a bit much. It doesn't help that I am the very identical image of our father, either. Just draw a scar on my head and call me Harry!" he laughed, shaking his head. He used to hate it he would go out in town with his dad, and numerous old classmates would approach Harry and point out the already obvious resemblance between them. Albus knew what he looked like, thank you very much, and he didn't need to be reminded constantly!
He frowned when Lily insisted that "Albers" was a fun thing to say. He narrowed his eyes when she broke into a huge grin, and he remembered how she liked to wind him up. She and James were very alike in that regard. Usually, when Al realised the little irks of people, he picked at it once or twice and let it drop. His brother and sister, on the other hand, seemed to find great pleasure in teasing. Al reckoned he just didn't get as much of a kick out of it as they did. So when Lily challenged him to find a nasty nickname for her, he thought of the numerous possibilities in his head and kept his mouth shut. He'd use it when the time was right, and at the thought, a dangerous little smirk crossed his lips.
"Awww…" he cooed when Lily mentioned she and James's names, and a playful expression made its way onto his face. "You mean you and James aren't going to get married and have little baby Harrys? Ah, it's a shame, and dad was so sure that was what would happen when he named you!" Al bit his lip, feeling rather uncomfortable when he thought of his own names. "Of course, that doesn't mean I'm madly in love with you and your eyes either… or an ancient headmaster." He shuddered. "Ooh. Let's just change the subject, shall we?"
Reaching over, he patted Lily on the head as she went on about her schoolwork. He knew how she was. "Best friends…" he repeated, an eyebrow raised and a half-smile threatening his cool complexion. "Sure, okay. No worries, little sister. I will always be proud of you—even if you prefer to see your schoolwork on fire as opposed to completed." She smiled at her and took his hand away. "When it comes to family, whether or not you do your work is sort of irrelevant." Al offered Lily a small smile, knowing she was torn between telling him a secret or keeping it himself. Sure, it definitely bothered him that she wouldn't tell him what it was—he hadn't even known there was a secret—but he didn't want to make her feel bad. "Yeah, no worries…" he said in a low voice. "As long as you're all right, it's fine." And he left it at that.
His mood took a bad turn when Lily said she was a bad sister. "You aren't a bad sister at all," he snapped, his eyebrows narrowing and his teeth gritting together. "You're a perfect little lion who's all about bravery and chivalry, and if that means you get a detention every once and a while, then that's how things are. Don't try to put this all on yourself, Lily. I know why James avoids me in the hallway." Al took his eyes away and took a deep breath. The hard, determined expression on his face relaxed slightly. "Sorry, sorry…" he breathed. "Ignore me. I'm ranting. I know I can come to you, sis. There's nobody I trust more."

So hold on tight and don't look back !!--------- As soon as her brother started to laugh, Lily couldn’t stop herself from joining in. She fed off of his happiness; when something amused him, she usually felt the same way about it. On top of that, just seeing her brother so much as smile pleased her. Few things hurt as badly as seeing Albus or James upset. She felt that it was her duty as the baby sister to make sure that they had no reason to frown. It was a job that she, without a doubt, took very seriously.
“From time to time? Oh please. If you had to pay me a knut every time you teased me, I’d be rich!” She flashed a cheeky grin at him. “And the snake thing means nothing. Not all snakes are complete pricks,” she assured him, her mind wandering to Scorpius. Between him and Albus, Lily was having a difficult time deciding whether or not Slytherins were really as horrible as everyone said. How could two decent wizards end up being sorted into a ‘dark’ house? There more she thought about it, the more it confused her. Though she was starting to get used to thinking about that blonde-haired Malfoy boy. His kinder side stood out to her more than the nasty part that she had previously seen. He was so cute…and, thanks to him, a new broom was propped up against her wall. Not that that was the main reason she had begun to fancy him. It was simply an added bonus.
At the mention of Mr. Snuggles, the red-head’s face grew very serious. Her lips tightened into a slight scowl and her eyes narrowed. “He’ll never be the same after what you did to him,” she muttered, proof that she was still bitter about the incident from her childhood. That poor teddy bear. He had been Lily’s pride and joy. Everywhere she went, her little arms had been holding the dark brown stuffed animal tightly against her. He had the cutest look to him; a tan colored belly, muzzle, and ears with beady plastic eyes and a string smile. Mr. Snuggles had made appearances in just about all of the family photos that included Lily until she was old enough to put down the bear without screaming, crying, or pounding her tiny fists against whoever had the nerve to coax Snuggles from her arms. When a hex had hit the teddy, courtesy of Al, the child had been hysterical. “You’re lucky you survived that. I don’t think I’ve ever been madder than I was then. It took hours for mum to calm me down!” Her voice and expression had lightened a tad, proving she wasn’t as bothered by the catastrophe of Mr. Snuggles as she might have seemed.
She nodded when he talked about the attention. “Well…if you want to be like the muggles and wear a costume for Halloween, you could be Dad! All you’d need is his glasses and a scar drawn on your forehead!” she suggested jokingly. Everyone knew that the girl looked like her mother’s side of the family, but some had also added that she resembled her namesake. She was very proud of that. Grandma Lily had been a very brave woman and someone that she had never heard a single negative word about. The main difference, her father often mused, was that Grandma Lily was described as well-behaved whereas the younger Lily tended to act like her grandfather.
That smirk on her brother’s face made a little jolt of fear pop up in her previously confident mind. He had come up with a nickname, she just knew it. “Oh Merlin…what is it? It isn’t too bad, is it? Please just don’t use it! I’ll never call you Albers again!” She had learned to not underestimate Al. He could be just as devilish as she and James were. If he looked smug before even revealing it, it had to be particularly bad. What could it possibly be? The worst she could think of was Loony Lily, but that wasn’t horrible.
The disgust on her face was comical as she listened to him talk about her marrying her brother. Her nose was crinkled and she could have sworn she felt her stomach twist at the mere idea of it. “Albus, that’s revolting! And wrong! How can you even say that without flinching?” Well duh, he wasn’t serious, but that didn’t stop Lily from being thoroughly grossed out. Incest was something that clearly didn’t appeal to her in any way. “Okay, ew! Any more talk of you or James being in love with me and I’ll hurl!” she warned. “Yes. Subject change. Perfect. What exactly is our new subject?”
Her hand rose to halfheartedly swat at the hand patting her head. “Actually, ‘best friends’ is an understatement. We’re much more like lovers.” She wasn’t fooling him, but hey, she was having some fun with this. The Gryffindor faked an emotional sniffle when her brother promised to always be proud of her. “I’m touched, big brother, really. Few Prefects would be able to accept their little sister’s combined passions of burning things and not doing schoolwork,” she said, managing to keep a straight face. Keeping a secret from Albus still had her feeling terrible. He was bound to take it personally when she wouldn’t tell him. “Yeah, I’m alright…and if I tell, or, well, show you, you have to promise not to freak out,” she sighed, hoping that she was just overestimating how bad his reaction would be.
The sharpness that had suddenly entered Al’s voice caught her off guard. At first, she winced and felt a little hurt by his statement, but she couldn’t seem to stop herself from retaliating. “Me being a Gryffindor has nothing to do with this! And James acts like that because he’s a twit; both you and I know that!” her voice rose slightly, but she did her very best not to sound like she was demanding an argument. She really didn’t want that, but she refused to let Albus consider himself a bad person just because of house he was in. “It’s okay…I just hate you thinking that you’re less of a great guy just because of the entire snake thing,” she softened her voice, reaching to pat him lightly on the arm. “Besides, you know what Dad said; Slytherin’s proved to be capable of producing heroic men.”

He grinned a grin like his brother's when Lily overemphasized his teasing. All right, so he teased her quite a bit, but what sort of big brother would he be if he didn't? Besides, he was way better about it than their older brother. He and Lily shared a grin just before she added that "not all snakes are complete pricks." His smile diminished a bit, though he doubted she would notice. Honestly, if only Lily realized just how deep in the Slytherin he was. There were days were he felt like there were vines sticking out from the dungeons and rooting him to the Slytherin common room. His stomach churned at the thought.
Most importantly, there were only two people that knew Al was a parselmouth, and that was his father and Benoite. Benoite knew because she had the same ability; he could confide in her. After all, very very few people in the world had the natural ability to speak parseltongue. His dad knew because… well… he was his dad… and he had gone through the same thing. But what bothered Al most of all was the very fact that Harry no longer had the ability to speak parseltongue. The only reason he had only been able to was because he had once had a piece of Voldemort inside of him… and now that it was gone, Al had no reason to have inherited that trait from Harry. But he did… and it frightened him.
People often said he was the exact copy of his dad, but in all truth, Albus often felt like he was his father's "Slytherin side." He knew it was ridiculous to think, but sometimes… that was the way it felt. He was going down a path that his father could have gone, but didn't. It was an insecurity that Al would never tell his mum or Lily and especially not James. He tried to shake it off and not think about it; it was the best choice now that he was around his sister. It was something that would forever bother Al in the back of his mind, but, he decided, at least he didn't have to focus on it constantly.
"Yeah, sure…" Al whispered, coming back to the present. "And not all Gryffindors are arrogant bastards." It was a joke, of course, but he neither looked at Lily or cracked a smile. He eventually turned back to her when he realised the air had stiffened significantly. A complete change of emotion, Al almost started cracking up when he came to the conclusion that Lily's scowl was due to his mentioning of "Mr. Snuggles." He suppressed his laughter and tightened his smile. "I didn't mean to, but no! You had to make me feel awful!" He let a small chuckle pass through. "Oh, come on now, little sister. As if you haven't broken any of my things!" He rolled his bright green eyes at the memories.
He scoffed when Lily mentioned being their father for Halloween. "I would never," he snapped. "People will honestly think that Harry Potter went trick-or-treating! And I've gotten enough of that "your son looks just like you!" business in my life, thank you very much." Al shook his head. His sister honestly could get him out of almost any bad mood; he was at a loss as to how she accomplished it. "Personally, I think you look a great deal like Grandma Molly, but I'm not pushing the costume on you, am I?"
When Lily swore to never call him "Albers" again, the smirk on Al's face only widened. "Good girl," he purred, and with that, he leaned back in the grass and relaxed. James and Lily had learned better than to underestimate Al's Weasley side, that was for sure.
He let out another small chuckle when Lily changed the subject and swatted at his hand for "praising" her. "Lovers," he re-stated, looking over and raising an eyebrow at her. "And I'm the one being revolting?" Shutting his eyes as the cold breeze rolled over him, he sighed lightly. "Oh, trust me. I'd much rather you do your homework and not get detention all the time, but there's only so much I can do from the dungeons." He shrugged, peaking open an eye to glance at her as she mused over her "secret." "Show me? Well, all right. When you're ready to "show me," I promise I won't freak out. I have secrets of my own anyway."
He said it partially to tease her, but he also said it because it was true. Al did want Lily to know he was a parselmouth, but he couldn't bring himself to tell her. He understood how she felt.
Al knew his little sister was a bit hurt by his retort; he hadn't intended to be so sharp with her. "Okay, okay, you're right!" he cried, sitting up straight again. "It's just…" he started to explain, but stopped himself. He couldn't tell her. He didn't know how to find the words. "Nevermind," he said. "You're right."
