Chapter by chapter, I'm falling faster and faster !!--------- Ah, Saturday morning. Everyone could sleep in, spend the day with friends, and pretty much do whatever they wanted. Very few would get up early to practice Quidditch by themselves. This was something that a certain Gryffindor girl knew and used to her advantage. It was around seven in the morning when she rolled out of bed. Her eyes were only partially open as she changed into shorts and a t-shirt, coaxed her hair into staying straight, and fussed with her appearance until she deemed herself ready for an early Quidditch practice. She grabbed her beloved broom from its resting place against the wall and walked out of her room. The fifth year was still groggy as she passed through the Gryffindor common room. Getting up this early on weekends wasn’t a common thing for her, but there were a few things Lily Potter felt that she needed to work on.
She was a bit rusty. Over the summer she had done a little bit of flying, but not enough to keep her skills as honed as they usually were. That had proved to be true a few days earlier. Catching the snitch had been a breeze, but her landing hadn’t been anywhere near smooth. The flashback of losing her balance and hitting the hard ground made her wince. Yes, she had been showing off a little with such a steep descent, but it was something she had actually had to do in multiple Quidditch games. She needed to figure out how to regain her ability to land right before the first official match. Otherwise, there was a good chance that she would crash in front of the entire school. The pressure already had her stressed. She took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind and calm down as she walked outside into the crisp September morning.
It was nice to be back at Hogwarts. As much as she loved summer and being at home, there was something about school that made her excited to return. She wasn’t the best student. Lily was a smart girl, but she wasn’t really one to fully apply herself in classes. That meant that it wasn’t the learning that she looked forward to. The only conclusion she could really come to was that it was the people that drew her back. All of her friends were here as well as a good portion of her family members. Spending time with them was definitely high on the list of her favorite things to do. Quidditch was right behind it. She smiled contently as the Pitch came into view. It was welcoming, just like the castle that it sat by. Her speed quickened. Despite the ankle injury she had acquired just a few days earlier, she wasn’t afraid to get back in the air. The stress she had previously felt faded away. She was all healed up and ready to perfect her skills.
For now, she wasn’t going to bother with getting the snitch out. She wanted to focus on getting her feet back on the ground without having to limp to the hospital wing afterwards. Just like she had expected, the Quidditch Pitch was empty. She was all alone as she stepped onto the grass and mounted her broom. A small surge of adrenaline was already shooting through her. With no hesitation, she rose off the ground. She shifted to pull off a smooth and fast turn. At least she wasn’t totally rusty. The girl sped up, savoring the feeling of the moderately chilly air blowing through her hair. She went higher into the air. There was no nervousness showing on her face or in her flying. She stayed confident and steady as she completed a full lap around the Pitch. Now it was time for the real challenge. Her eyes narrowed slightly. Without bothering to slow down very much, she began to descend. This was something she had done a million times. All she had to do was pull up a little when she got close to the ground and she would land perfectly…
At least she didn’t twist her ankle like last time, but her frustration was obvious as she stood up and examined the scrape on her knee. It didn’t hurt, but it felt like a mark of failure. She didn’t stop to sulk. A few seconds later, Lily was back on her broom and circling in the air once again. She repeated her previous procedure, grew closer to the grass, and ended up lying on her side with her broom next to her. This time, the wind was knocked out of her. She laid there for a moment, gasping for breath. That one would probably leave a bruise. But, once more, she clutched her broom and got back on her feet. Maybe the third time would be the charm. It wasn’t. What in the name of Merlin was wrong with her? She sat up, but this time she stopped to catch her breath. This was something she had known how to do for years. There was no way she was giving up, but this was getting irritating.

Scorpius had been up for a couple of hours and he was restless in bed. It was a Saturday morning, and for some odd reason, he could sleep in. He glanced at his clock. It was about six thirty. Shrugging to himself, he climbed out of bed and took a quick shower. The only thing that would help make him sleep would be a nice lap or two around the Quidditch pitch. He got out after a couple of minutes and pulled on his shirt and pants he wears specifically for Quidditch practice and grabbed his broom. He would out of the common room in minutes.
He left the dungeons and headed out of the castle. The cool morning breeze hit his face and he smiled. It woke him up more and put him in a better mood. He jumped on his broom and flew straight to the pitch. He flew around for a good ten-fifteen minutes, doing flips and new turns he needed to know for the up-coming games. He needed to make sure he could beat his opponent. After getting most of the flying out of his system, he flew to the stands and sat down, enjoying the morning breeze. Broom next to him, he leaned back against the bleachers and closed his eyes and just relaxed.
A nice few minutes past until he opened his eyes again. He must have dosed off. Rubbing his face, he sat up and looked around. His eyebrow rose when he saw a familiar red-head flying around. Potter. What was she doing up so early? He watched as she flew around like he did and fell when she went to land. He watched her fall the next couple times and he laughed. When she didn’t get up the last time she tried, he jumped back on his broom and flew down to her. “Who taught you how to land? You’re dad?” he laughed, landing next to her.

Chapter by chapter, I'm falling faster and faster !!--------- This was really starting to grind Lily’s gears. She knew how to play Quidditch. It was her passion and something that she had excelled at for years. Her flying was as smooth and precise as ever, catching the snitch was no problem, but one of the most basic things was making her look like a novice. She could settle for making a slower, more cautious landing, but that would look ridiculous. It was something that should have come naturally. The only good thing about this was that she had discovered her sudden weakness before an actual match. Her teammates would tease her about it for a while, but that was way better than the entire school taunting her about it right up to the day she graduated.
Sitting in the grass and catching her breath really did help. She was ready to try again, but only after she rested for a few more moments. Her knees were bleeding, there was a slight soreness in her elbow, and some bruises were bound to show up on her side. It was miraculous that she had any desire to get back on her broom, but then again, Lily was stubborn. Besides, it was Quidditch. Her father had been a great seeker and her mother had played professionally for Merlin’s sake! They had taught her well and she knew that she was capable of getting this down. If she failed to do so, her reputation would be at risk. She narrowed her eyes and gave the broom laying beside her a bit of a dirty look. Maybe the thing was finally starting to age. Before school had started, her father had offered to get her a new broom, but she had insisted that hers flew perfectly. If this was the explanation, then it was irritatingly ironic. The darn thing would have to do until her parents could send her a new one. There was still a chance that Lily had forgotten how to land correctly, but she preferred placing the blame on the broom.
Another person flying toward her caught her attention. Oh, great. Someone had witnessed her multiple failures. She briefly considered just grabbing her broom and rushing away before they could confront her, but it was too late now. Hopefully it was just another Gryffindor, or perhaps one of her brothers. That wouldn’t be too horrible. But as the figure got close, she recognized that blonde hair. An annoyed huff rose from her lungs as she grabbed her broom and got back up on her feet. This was going to be interesting.
Scorpius was someone she had never really bothered to talk to. The Malfoys were not friends of the Potters. Her father had told her multiple stories about Draco and, from what she had seen of the man, his son was a spitting image. Surely the boy was just as bad and not someone to pay much attention to. Lily’s eldest brother, James, had warned her to keep her distance from him. He was a Slytherin, so she assumed her had the stereotypical less-than-charming personality that went with the house. Still…for some reason, something sparked up inside her whenever she noticed him. It was small and barely existent, but she would be lying if she claimed that she wanted nothing to do with the boy. He was attractive, even if they were rivals in Quidditch.
Her jaw tightened when he landed beside her. It was obvious to her that he was amused rather than sympathetic. “Yes, actually. But the way he taught me didn’t involve crashing,” she spoke in a slightly hostile voice, “I’m just a little…out of practice.” She braced herself for a snide remark or rude criticism. He had no reason to be kind, so she didn’t expect him to be. The entire scenario was worsened by the fact that a subtle, but visible, blush had appeared on her cheeks. It was something that she just couldn’t prevent. She had embarrassed herself in front of Scorpius Malfoy and was already regretting it for more than one reason.

As soon as Scorpius landed next to her, he knew she wasn’t happy to see him. Hell…he wasn’t happy to be in her presence either, but here he was. He couldn’t help but come down and see what had happened to her. Sure, he teased her, but he did want to make sure she was alright. It was odd. He knew who she was…who her parents were…and what his father told him about them, yet here he was…making sure she was okay. Something wasn’t right.
“I’d say more than a little,” he said looking at her scraped up knee. “You do know, you’re not supposed to fall on your ass, right?” he laughed. “But are you all right, though?” he asked. Yeah, he was an ass, but every now and then…he was caring and a bit considerate. It was weird to see a nice Malfoy, so he hid that part…a lot. “The last fall looked like it hurt.” He’d fallen a few times, so he knew what she was going through.
He hated falling off is broom, but he couldn’t disappoint his father with falling. He had to be the best. But he had to focus on the problem on hand. Potter not being able to land. That was actually kind of amusing. “So…do you not remember how to land, Potter?” he asked. He didn’t understand who could forget how to land. It was the first thing you learned in first year flying lessons. Potter must have just been hit on the head a few too many times.

Chapter by chapter, I'm falling faster and faster !!--------- There was a good chance that, if it hadn’t been for the Malfoy-Potter rivalry, Lily would have been a lot friendlier toward Scorpius. His being a Slytherin wasn’t enough for her to act hostile toward him. Sure, she wasn’t the biggest fan of the snakes, but she would be nice to a Slytherin until he or she gave her a reason not to. This was a personal thing. As far as she knew, the feelings were mutual. She eyed him with suspicion. Half of her wanted to turn and storm away, but for some reason there was a part of her that wanted to be around him. The only word she could use to describe it was ‘weird’. She was so sure that she disliked him, but if that was true, why did she get that strange feeling when she looked at him?
“No, just a little,” she insisted, her eyes narrowing. He wasn’t making this any less embarrassing for her. Then again, she shouldn’t have been surprised. He was probably savoring this. She looked like a complete novice, not a seasoned seeker. “No, really? I thought that was how all the pros did it!” she gasped with thick sarcasm. Her hand rested on her hip and she rolled her eyes as he laughed. She wasn’t the least bit surprised. Nothing was more amusing than watching an enemy screw up, especially when they did it repeatedly. His next question, now that did catch her off guard. Was he serious? “Yeah, I’m fine. I’d still be on the ground if I wasn’t.” She masked her surprise with the same dry tone she had been using. There was no way he could honestly care about whether or not she was okay. He was Scorpius Malfoy for Merlin’s sake! “It wasn’t that bad.” Actually, it had, but she wasn’t going to admit it. She hid the slight pain she was still in and continued watching him with a cold, untrusting glare.
Her gaze subtly decided to wander over him. She didn’t even mean to check him out, but she couldn’t stop herself. He was hot…in an arrogant, obnoxious way. No, it was wrong. She shouldn’t have even been looking at him like that. “Actually, I can land. I’m pretty sure it’s just my broom. It has some years on it and that’s probably affecting its performance,” she claimed. That very well might have been true, but even if it wasn’t, it was a good enough excuse. “If you tell anyone about this, I’ll find a way to make you regret it,” she warned. That was a legitimate threat. If Lily wanted to get back at someone, she rarely hesitated to hex them until they begged for mercy. Then again…she wasn’t so sure she could actually bring herself to harm the Slytherin boy.

Scorpius smirked at her answer. “Fine, just a little,” he said. He really was in no mood too argue with the red-head and personally…he didn’t really care. He saw her eyes narrowing, and that never was a good sign. He was actually trying to be somewhat nice and she was being all snippy. That just wasn’t very polite. His eyebrow rose when she snapped with a sarcastic tone. “No need for the tone, Potter,” he said, leaning against his broom. “It was just a playful jab.” She was being so testy. He wanted to snap back at her and make her upset, but something in him was telling him not to. He didn’t know why, but when he was around her, he didn’t like being overly cruel. Playfully…sure, but not completely mean.
“I was just asking. You could show a little compassion. It’s not every day that I give a rat’s ass,” he said, narrowing his eyes at her. It was true. Every now and then, something in him would make him be nice to certain people. Lily especially. He didn’t like it, but at the same time…he did. And he would make up some stupid excuse to torment Lily with his presence. He shrugged at her response to his comment about her fall. “If you say so.” He still thought it was a pretty bad fall, even if she didn't want to admit it. He ran his fingers through his hair and glanced at her. He caught her eyes looking him over and he grinned. He had plenty of chances to check her out, and he had done so. He didn’t need her spotting him do it.
When she spoke again, he thought about what she said. “Well,” he said, taking his weight off his broom, “if you say it’s your broom, then here.” He held his broom out to her, offering it to her. “Take my broom and try it a couple of times. Then we’ll see if it’s really the broom.” He didn’t know if it really was the broom or just her, but he was here, might as well see what or who the problem was. He rolled his eyes at her threat. “I do have better things to do than gossip about you and your landing failures, Potter. Just take my broom and give it a go.” He grinned at her. “And who knows, if you’re a good little girl…I’ll get you a new broom.”

Chapter by chapter, I'm falling faster and faster !!--------- Once again, Scorpius surprised her. She was expecting him to jump at the chance to argue and maybe even add to her humiliation. But he had agreed with her. This time she couldn’t hide it as well. Her eyebrow rose slightly and she gave him a look, but she didn’t respond to his agreeing with her. The only other reaction she had was a slight softening in her suspicious glare. She didn’t completely open up, but she did relax a little. “It sounded more taunting than playful,” she muttered, looking away from him and at her broom. It was starting to look its age. That wasn’t a good sign. Then again, it would be a relief if the problem was the broom and not its flyer.
What he said next…now that was just shocking. She stared at him for a long moment, confusion completely replacing the cold look. “How was I…how do I know that you actually care? Why would you?” she questioned, her tone not nearly as sharp as it had been. This was almost frustrating. They had always been enemies. He was a Malfoy, one of the boys that her family had specifically warned her about. Any words they spoke to each other were supposed to be spiteful. This caught her off guard and, more importantly, made her pay more attention to the voice in the back of her mind that constantly pointed out her little attraction to the Slytherin. “I’ve done worse. I crashed into a thorn bush once…it wasn’t pretty,” she said in a lighter voice. It was clear that she was still tense, but now she wasn’t so sure about how she was supposed to react to him. When he grinned, she knew why. Her hazel eyes immediately locked on his face. He had totally caught her checking him out. Slight color rose to her cheeks. “Nice practice outfit.” That had meant to be a cover, but she didn’t realize how stupid it sounded until the words had passed through her lips.
She watched him in disbelief for a minute before rolling her eyes. “Okay, fine. I’ll prove it,” she stated, taking the broom. It felt so much different from her old Firebolt. Even the wood seemed sturdier. For a brief moment, she hesitated. If she crashed his broom, this situation would just get worse. He would never let it go. “I have a hard time believing that you would skip out on an opportunity to tell your Quidditch team about how you saw Lily Potter fall on her ass multiple times while trying to land,” she scoffed. This felt like a challenge and that had made her feel snappy, like she had been before. “Oh yeah right. Like you would actually buy me a broom,” she laughed, mounting the one he had just handed her. Yeah, this was definitely different, but in a good way. She kicked off the ground. It moved smoother than her’s, that was for sure.
She flew a quick lap around the pitch, and then came in for the dreaded landing. The ground grew closer and closer. She braced herself and…it was a perfect landing. Her feet hit the grass with a light thud and the broom obediently stopped with her. The very first thing she did was smirk at Scorpius. “Mhm. It’s the broom,” she declared smugly. Thank Merlin she hadn’t embarrassed herself. Well, maybe she spoke too soon. She had forgotten about the broom she owned which was laying on the ground, abandoned, and apparently it wasn’t too happy about being forgotten. Lily walked toward the boy, tripped over it, and landed on her right side with Scorpius’ broom beside her. It was official; she just couldn’t win.

Scorpius saw her eyebrow raise, and he knew exactly why. She wasn’t expecting him to agree with her. Hell, every now and then he was gonna agree with someone that was right. He smirked. “You say taunting, I say playful. Same thing,” he chuckled. She can think he was being taunting all she wanted. To her and everyone else, sure he was being taunting…but he was being playful about it. So in his eyes, it was the same thing. He shrugged at her when she spoke about him caring. “You don’t have to believe me about caring. I know that I was, so…” he said with another shrug. It wasn’t his problem if she didn’t think he was actually giving a damn. Just look at who his parents were…he wasn’t really expecting people to think he could be nice.
He laughed. “A thorn bush? And how’d that feel?” he teased. He had crashed before, but never into a thorn bush. That was just silly. Was she really not paying that much attention to where she was going? The only thing he was happy about, was that her tone was much lighter than before. That was better then snappy and rude. He wasn’t in the mood for that. Yeah, he started it by bothering her, but he liked being around her. He couldn’t not be around her. After he caught her staring at him, she tried to cover it up. He kept himself from laughing at her weak attempts and looked down at his practice gear. “Thanks…I think,” he said, with a small grin. At least she was giving him some kind of attention he could enjoy.
When he offered her his broom, he expected her to snatch at it quicker than she did. He was offering his brand new broom to someone who was supposed to be a rival. But when she did grab it, he smirked at her. He knew she wouldn’t be able to pass that up. When she spoke about gossiping he shook his head. “I beg to differ. I may enjoy seeing people I don’t like, falling on their asses, but it’s all more my enjoyment only. If other’s happen to be around…then we’ll gossip about it. Other than that…there’s no point. Plus, then I can just tease you more about it myself.” As she spoke and mounted his broom, he just looked at her. “You never know. If you like my broom, I can always send for another one for you.”
He wouldn’t mind doing that. He could just owl his father some ridiculous excuse to get a new one, and he was sure he’d get it. And when it came, he’d just give it to Lily. No problem. Plus, he could just owl it to her with an anonymous letter, hinting that it was him. She was a fellow seeker. It wouldn’t be fair if he was chasing the snitch on his nice broom, and she was stuck with one of the old ones in the shed. That just wasn’t fun. He kept his eyes on her as she flew around. So far, it was looking good for her. He kept watching as she started to descend to land. She landed and she was on her feet and not her ass.
“Nice job, Potter,” he smirked. Then she was all smug about her landing. He should’ve expected that, but then she tripped over her own broom on the ground and he gave her a cocky smirk. “Doesn't pay to be cocky, Potter,” he said, holding out his hand to help her up. “But now that we know it is your old, worn out broom. Would you like a new one?” he asked. “It’s no problem if you do. Just one letter and one will be here in a day.”

Chapter by chapter, I'm falling faster and faster !!--------- Where was this coming from? She had never seen him act like this in her five years at Hogwarts. Of course she suspected that he was up to something. There was no reason for him to be nice to her or any of the Potters. “Not quite. Teasing usually implies that it’s friendly, and I wouldn’t consider you a friendly person.” Even she was surprised by the lack of sharpness in her voice. It was difficult for her to be icy toward someone unless they caused her to act that way. So far, Scorpius had done nothing to deserve that. He was acting like a normal person rather than a stuck up Malfoy. “But why would you?” she questioned. It was genuine curiosity, not a harsh sneer like it might have been a few moments ago. She hadn’t let her guard down, but there was no more scowling.
“It was great. I loved it,” she joked, a slight smile sneaking its way to her lips. “Actually it sucked pretty badly. It happened when I was first learning how to fly, so I was pretty young. My parents had an interesting time pulling me out of the bloody thing.” It was one of those things she would remember for forever. At the time, she had been scared to death and in quite a bit of pain. Looking back on it was sort of amusing. She had had it coming in a way. Despite her mother and father’s warning to only fly with a responsible adult around, the redhead had taken her brand new broom out for a spin. It was a good thing that her mother had glanced out the window just in time to see her daughter crash right into the treacherous plant. Her attention was snapped back into the current situation. She shouldn’t have said anything. “No problem,” she answered, being sure to avoid eye contact with him. It hadn’t been her smoothest moment.
His smirk made her a little more uneasy. This wouldn’t freak her out if she knew his motives for being nice. Once again, why in the world would he just suddenly choose to give a damn about her and let her try out his broom? Odd was an understatement. This went against everything she had heard, learned, and seen about the Malfoys. It was, however, an opportunity she just could not pass up. “So that’s why you’re doing this. You want to see if I’ll crash again for you personal amusement,” she guessed, smirking. If that was true, it just made this an even bigger challenge and Lily was rarely able to walk away from a challenge. It was one of her big flaws. “Okay, that’s just too good to be true. What do you want in return?” she asked, giving him a suspicious look. He wouldn’t just buy a rival seeker a new broom like that, especially a seeker that happened to be a Potter. Or…would he? Maybe he was trying to win her over for some reason. She couldn’t even guess why.
As much as she wished it wouldn’t, her mind started to get creative. There was one good excuse for why he would do this that came to her mind; he was attracted to her. The more she thought about it, the more absurd it was. She knew a good number of girls that would kill for Scorpius’ attention. Lily was just the wily class clown. She was no expertise flirt or beauty queen. Thinking about it almost distracted her while she was flying. She only shoved it to the back of her mind so she could focus on not butchering her landing.
She was pretty darn proud of herself. “Why thank you, Malfoy.” It was impossible to hide her smugness. That changed when she ended up on the ground again. Surprisingly, she didn’t blush. She broke out laughing instead. “At least I pulled off a good landing!” she reminded. It was easier for her to laugh at herself rather than face the embarrassment that she was actually feeling. Once she calmed herself to a simple smirk, she took his hand and pulled herself up out of the grass. “Do you promise not to rig it? I really don’t want a possessed broom that will throw me off every time I ride it,” she teased. She had opened up to him a little without even noticing it.

Scorpius shrugged. “Ehh, whatever. It’s however you decide to look at it.” Her voice wasn’t very sharp anymore, and he was surprised. He was expecting her to be more cold with him like before, but she wasn’t. That raised a few flags in shi head to pay more attention to it. Something was odd about it. He cocked an eyebrow at her question. Was she really asking that? “Why not? Just because I’m a Malfoy, doesn’t mean I have to be a complete ass all the time. You looked hurt and I just wanted to make sure you were okay and not terribly hurt. Forgive me,” he said, simply. He had no reason to apologize, but he didn’t want her feeling weird for him caring for that moment. It was…new to him as well.
He laughed when she joked about liking falling into the bush. He didn’t think there’d be anyone that would actually like falling into a thorn bush. That just seemed painful, and completely uncomfortable to land in. “Yeah…for first learning how to fly…that must’ve taught you a lesson,” he grinned. He could just imagine her parents freaking out and trying to get her out of the thing. The picture was pretty amusing in his head, but he stopped the laugh about to escape his lips. She didn’t need to know that he was thinking intently about her. That was just weird. He quickly shook the thoughts of her and focused back on the red-head. At her response, he just smiled and waved it off. It wasn’t the first time someone complimented something he was wearing. Even if it was something as silly as his t-shirt and sweats that he practiced in.
By the look on her face, she still seemed suspicious about his actions and words. He didn’t blame her though. A Malfoy being nice to a Potter? That was completely unheard of. No one would believe it anyway, unless they saw it for themselves. So at the moment, he and Lily were safe from any stupid gossip that could happen. He grinned and nodded. “Of course I want it for my own personal amusement. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” He liked having her to himself, even if it as just for a few minutes. Today, it was definitely longer than a few minutes. He liked it. It was his turn to look at her out of curiosity. “I don’t want anything in return,” he stated. He wouldn’t feel right having her give him something. Although…it was a good question to a small request. But that would wait until after.
“You’re very welcome, Potter,” he laughed. He was glad that she was able to stick the landing without killing herself. That would’ve been a problem. Especially if word got back to either of their parents. He was sure that her parents would think he made her fall on purpose, and his would be proud of him for harming her. They were just too different and he didn’t think they could ever come together. He wondered what would happen if he did start to have feelings for her. Could he have feelings for her? That would explain why he was being extra nice to her, but still…he wasn’t sure. And he didn’t even know if she would return the feelings. He cleared that thought from his head also. It was a silly thought.
“Yeah, at least you did that much,” he smiled as she laughed. He was glad that he was able to help her feel better about landing. As she pulled herself up, he shook his head. “I promise.
